Researchers in Brazil conducted a clinical study for six months to compare the efficacy of five different brands of Botox for sweating.
Hyperhidrosis is a condition where sweating exceeds far from normal. This condition is characterized by excessive sweating. Several surgical and non-surgical treatments are available for the treatment of excessive sweating with an efficacy between 90% to 95%.
Hyperhidrosis can be generalized or a focal condition. Botulinum toxin type-A (BTX-A) is one of the most currently researched and effective treatments for focal hyperhidrosis. This type of Botox for sweating (BTX-A) is one of the strongest of eight total purified protein complexes obtained from a neurotoxin produced by the bacterium called Clostridium botulinum.
During treatment for focal hyperhidrosis, BTX-A is injected below the skin. It acts by inhibiting the release of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine at the nerves which supply blood to the sweat glands. The efficacy of the botox for sweating can be tested by the starch-iodine test.
Brazil is one of the few countries where five different commercially and registered BTX-A treatments are available on the market: Botox, Botulift, Dysport, Xeomin, and Prosigne.
To find out the science behind the treatment of Botox for sweating, researchers in Brazil conducted a six-month study to compare the efficacy of the five treatments. They measured their efficacies by the treatments’ abilities to reduce the area of sweating, an area the called the sweating inhibition halo (SIH). The findings of this study were published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal.
The study involved 25 adult female volunteers who were injected in the bones and muscles of the back with both 100 units (100UI) and 500 units (500UI) BTX-A products which were reconstituted in a ratio of 1:2.5. Then these products were applied in five different concentrations (1:2.5U, 2:5U, 3:7.5U, 4:10U, and 5:12.5U). A starch-iodine test was performed after 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 days, to obtain the largest diameter of SIH.
The results of the study showed larger SIH for all BTX-A with the higher number of units. The Botox products, namely Botox, Botulift, Dysport, and Prosigne, had almost similar SIH with a few differences for some doses and months. Only Xeomin was found to have the smallest SIH in comparison to all other BTX-A products, in any dose and time.
One limitation of this study was the involvement of only female subjects. is study will be useful for the doctors to have a comprehensive overview of the comparison of different brands of botox for sweating, knowing how different brands act differently for treatment of hyperhidrosis. It would also help them choose the best botox for sweating treatment for the correct body area based on how it spreads around the risk areas.
